Review of A levels
Following the recommendations in the White Paper, a review of A levels was undertaken. In order to reduce the burden of assessment, it was agreed that the number of assessed units should be reduced from six to four in most subjects. The inclusion of coursework in A levels will be retained only where it is the most valid way of assessing an aspect of a subject, and there will be no optional coursework. The revised A levels will be introduced for first teaching in September 2008. Mathematics A levels are currently being piloted and will be revised for first teaching in 2011.
The challenge of A2 units will be increased by requiring questions that elicit different types of responses and deter formulaic answers. There will be greater connectivity between sections of questions and a requirement for extended writing in all subjects. There will be improved synoptic assessment, testing the holistic understanding of the subject shown by a candidate.
In order to recognise candidates' achievements following the introduction of increased stretch and challenge, a new A* grade will be introduced to reward higher performance. The A* grade will apply to all A levels.
