GCSEs are being revised

GCSEs are being revised to ensure that the progression route from key stage 3 and towards advanced-level study is made more explicit. GCSE revisions will build on the changes proposed to secondary education through the Secondary Curriculum Review and QCA's recommendation on changes to coursework requirements. In addition, functional skills in English, mathematics and ICT will be incorporated into GCSEs.

Decisions on coursework in English, mathematics and ICT will be made once the outcomes of the functional skills trials are known. Revised GCSEs will be available for first teaching in 2009.
