Improving subject leadership
Leading history
A subject leader for history provides leadership and direction for the subject ensuring that it is managed and organised to meet the needs of both the school and of the subject. Throughout their work, the overarching aim of a subject leader is to improve the quality of teaching and learning in history in order to meet the needs and aspirations of all pupils, and to raise standards of achievement in the subject within a school.
Subject leadership involves
- Vision: a personal and shared view of the role of history in the school curriculum and its contribution to young peoples' lives and learning
- Inspiration: communicating enthusiasm for history across the school community and beyond
- Reflection and evaluation: finding out what is good about teaching and learning in history in the school and how it might be improved
- Leadership: having a clear sense of direction, working for and with others to secure their commitment to achieving a shared vision for the subject; solving problems and making decisions
- Management: organising and planning; analysing, understanding and interpreting information and needs; making effective and efficient use of resources
