QCA scheme of work

A further ten (four for key stage 1 and six for key stage 2) units have been written for the QCA/DfES primary history scheme of work. Three of these provide examples of how to make effective links between history and other subjects in the national curriculum. The remaining examples show how individual schools can adapt some of the existing units to suit their particular circumstances.

Key stage 1

What were castles like a long time ago? (Year 1)

This adaptation of the QCA/DfES history scheme of work unit 2 ‘What were homes like a long time ago?’ explores what it was like to live in a castle in the Middle Ages, why castles were built, how they were built and how they changed over time. This adapted unit draws on children’s understanding of life in a 21st century home and allows exploration of how others lived in the past and why we still have such significant reminders of this way of life.

What can we learn about the past and present seaside? (Years 1/2)

The unit combines aspects of the QCA/DfES history scheme of work unit 3 ‘What were seaside holidays like in the past?’ and geography scheme of work unit 4 ‘Going to the seaside’ and investigates the past development and current character of a seaside resort. It develops children’s knowledge and understanding of the seaside resort as an example of a place that is different from their own locality. Children use a range of sources of information and skills of historical and geographical enquiry to compare past resorts with current resorts.

What do we know about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot? (Year 2)

This is an adaptation of the QCA/DFES history scheme of work unit 4 ‘Why do we remember Florence Nightingale?’ and is designed to complement it. It focuses on an important event in British history that is still celebrated in Britain today. It is about an infamous person, Guy Fawkes, and, generally, how people affect events in history and in the present.
