Leading geography

Key stage 2

Subject leaders or coordinators for geography play a crucial role in the development of the subject in primary schools and thus on the standards of teaching and learning in the subject. They have a number of responsibilities. Geography coordinators are not always specialists in the subject and may also have other responsibilities within a school.

Assessing progress in geography
Although schools are not required to conduct end-of-key-stage assessments in geography in key stages 1 and 2, a number of schools use the level descriptions to make judgements about children’s attainment. The attached files provide a manageable way of judging levels at key stages 1 and 2. The level descriptions are divided into the four aspects of geography knowledge, skills and understanding in the national curriculum, in line with the guidance on progression on the National curriculum in action website. Subject coordinators may find it helpful to apply the grid to portfolios of children’s work to agree the standards by which they judge their children’s attainment in geography. National curriculum in action shows examples of children’s work – with a commentary - providing evidence of aspects of performance associated with each level.
