The research
As part of its arts curriculum development project, QCA has carried out three major studies into the arts in schools.
- The first collected information about arts provision from 11 schools that gained Artsmark Gold in 2000 (the first round of the award). You can read about this in the Arts-rich report.
- The second collected information from a random stratified sample of 21 schools. You can read about this in the Stratified sample report.
- The third brought together evidence of effective arts practice from 11 schools selected from the other two studies. Each school developed practical work to achieve specific arts and school outcomes. You can read about these schools in the Arts in practice section of this website.
All of our research showed that the arts -- art and design, music, dance, drama and media arts -- really do make a difference to schools. The schools involved in the research believe that the arts are not only important in their own right, but that they can also play a major part in school improvement. All of the schools now want to give the arts greater emphasis.

The arts motivate and enhance the learning environment, and bind the school together.
