The school and the community
The arts can help schools to forge strong links with pupils' families and the wider community.
- Arts events are often better attended than any other school meetings. Parents may be more likely to attend parents' evenings if they can also see their children perform.
- Parents are often willing to help out at arts events, giving them an opportunity to get to know teachers and other pupils.
- Arts activities can be part of the school's programme to better serve the community. Inviting parents and families to see performances by touring companies gives them opportunities to see arts live. The school can provide a focus for arts in the community.
- Pupils can contribute something positive to the community through the arts, for example by performing in residential homes and for disadvantaged groups.
Investment in the arts can play a major part in the regeneration of communities. For example, some of the Creative Partnerships (partnerships between groups of schools and creative practitioners) are in areas of deprivation. These partnerships aim to contribute to local regeneration, ensuring that school-leavers have the skills and confidence to work in the arts and creative industries.
