Increasing cultural understanding

Arts education helps pupils to understand the relationship between arts and culture. As a result, they learn to appreciate their own and other people's values, meanings and identities.

This is the least well-developed area of research and it is currently being explored further. However, it is a critical aspect of arts education as it provides a way into developing a much deeper understanding of the arts -- the 'why' and 'how', as well as 'what' has been created. It is also the only way to develop understanding and appreciation of artforms from different times and cultures.
