A cross-phase arts project

Summary

This comprehensive school wanted to improve links with a local primary school by working with it on an arts-based project linked with geography. Teachers from the two schools shared expertise and a small group of year 9 pupils acted as mentors to two classes of year 3 pupils. The pupils worked together in both schools to explore geographical topics through dance, drama and art. The project culminated in a joint performance at the end of term.

As a result of the project, the primary school and the year 3 pupils' parents saw the secondary school in a much more favourable light. All of the pupils involved were highly motivated and gained confidence. The year 9 pupils developed a strong sense of responsibility, which increased their commitment to the work. The year 3 pupils learned skills in art and design, dance and drama, as well as increasing their geographical knowledge.
