Starting the day with arts activities

About the school

This small primary school has 117 pupils on roll. The vast majority of its pupils are white (none speak English as an additional language) and 15 are eligible for free school meals. There are 21 pupils on the school's special educational needs register, 3 of whom have statements. Last year's national curriculum test results at key stage 2 were above the national average: 82% of pupils reached level 4 and above in English, and 77% in maths.

Arts in the school

Within its arts policy, the school strives to:

  • provide pupils throughout the school with a broad experience of the arts;
  • enable pupils to develop their individual skills and knowledge base.

The school is committed to the arts. It provides a solid base of arts activities throughout the curriculum, including drawing, painting, clay work, dance, drama and music. Drama and music culminate in school productions and concerts. Pupils regularly visit, or are visited by, theatre groups, orchestral groups and galleries, for example the English National Ballet Company and The National Gallery. They are also free to attend after-school clubs in dance, craft and music.

The school regularly undertakes large-scale arts projects. Recently, these have included a large mosaic of the royal coat of arms, a stone giant's head, a story tree carved from an oak tree and an entrance to the school's millennium garden.
