Vocational qualifications

A wide range of vocational qualifications (VQs) are accredited into the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). These cover almost every industry sector, and every level of the NQF.

VQs are offered by a large number of awarding bodies. They range from broad-based VQs to specialist qualifications designed for a paricular sector. In many cases, suites of qualifications are available, offering progression thought the levels of the NQF.

In partnership with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the Sector Skills Development Agency (SSDA), QCA has a remit to extend the take-up of vocational qualifications. In line with the more flexible school curriculum, this included their use by more 14- to 19-year-olds.

VQs serve a range of purposes in different sectors and at different levels, and consequently vary in terms of size, level and assessment arrangements.

All VQs must meet a set of criteria that set them apart from other qualifications in the national framework. These are available on the main QCA website.
