Level 3 programme: Beauty therapy, in a FE college


* Programme objectives *  
  • To provide students with a broad educational base for a career in a rapidly changing service industry – beauty
  • To develop knowledge, skills and experience for work in the beauty sector and recognise the applicability of these to other service industries
  • To achieve the BTEC qualification and to secure access into higher education or employment with supervisory/management prospects
  *

  Main qualification   BTEC national diploma in applied sciences (beauty therapy)    

  Other compulsory qualification(s)   Key skills in communication, working with others, problem solving and Improving own learning and performance at level 3
Key skills in application of number and IT at level 2
   

  Other optional qualifications   Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) Certificates in ear piercing and Indian head massage
Open College Network (OCN) level 3 certificate in planning and progression
   

  Duration   2 year    

  Entry requirements   4 GCSEs at grades A*-C    

  Progression opportunities   Higher education – HND/HNC in beauty therapy or degree in biological sciences
Employment in beauty industry with progression to supervisory or management level .
   

  Course content  

Basic and new technologies and Introduction to complementary therapies (7 hours per week for 1 year).

Diet and nutrition (1 hour per week for 1 year).

Epilation (2 hours per week for 1 year).

Facial therapies and dermatology (4 hours per week for 1 year).

Body massage (3 hours per week for 1 year).

Sports massage (90 minutes per week for 1 year).

Business Studies (1 hour per week for 1 year).

Biological and physical sciences (150 minutes per week for 1 year).

Microbiology (1 hour per week for 1 year).

Anatomy and physiology (90 minutes per week for 1 year).

Key skills (2 hours per week for 1 year).

Study skills (2 hours per week for 2 years).

Developing and practising skills in the college salon and commercial salons (minimum of 1 day per week for 2 years).

Placement in a hospital, residential home for the elderly, support group/network and so on to highlight beauty therapy’s contribution to self-esteem and mental health.

Tutorial sessions including individual action planning/review and career planning (1 hour per week for 2 years).

   

  Additional opportunities   Skills competitions.
Visits to salons, exhibitions, health centres and other service outlets.
Careers guidance from adviser and careers awareness opportunities (careers conventions, careers fairs, careers libraries and so on).
