Level 2 programme: Hairdressing in a FE college


* Programme objectives *  
  • To enable students to demonstrate and apply vocational knowledge and understanding and specialist practical skills in order to achieve the NVQ
  • To equip students for progression into employment in hairdressing or other employment and/or to NVQ level 3
  • To develop students’ understanding of the demand and expectations of work in a hairdressing salon and the business considerations behind them
  • To develop confidence and maturity in working with others

  Main qualification   Hairdressing NVQ (level 2)    

  Other compulsory qualification(s)   Key skills in communication, application of number and IT at level 1 or level 2, depending on previous achievement    

  Other optional qualifications   Additional specialist NVQ units eg Afro Caribbean, shaving
GCSE English and/or GCSE maths
   

  Duration   2 year    

  Entry requirements   No formal requirements
Selection through interview, hand-eye coordination and basic skills tests
   

  Progression opportunities   Full or part-time study to NVQ level 3

  Course content  

Practical hairdressing (11 hours per week) with theoretical underpinning (2 hours per week).
Includes:

  • advising and consulting with clients
  • developing and maintaining effective team work and relationship
  • salon reception
  • health, safety and security in the salon environment
  • shampooing, conditioning, perming and neutralising, cutting, styling
  • communication.

Visits and exhibitions.

Maths and ICT in hairdressing/business contexts (2 hours per week).

Tutorial programme – progress review, portfolio building, personal and social education, careers education (4 hours per week).

Visits from employees in a range of similar service sectors, discussing the priorities for their work, with a focus on business considerations.

Local campaign – each year the hairdressing group investigates issues of local concern and chooses one as the focus of a planned awareness-raising and lobbying campaign.

   

  Additional opportunities   Non-examined modules in catering and leisure and tourism, including customer service and insight into hairdressing careers in the leisure and tourism or hotel trade.
