These case studies look at ways of broadening the curriculum by careful choice of a fourth AS. promoting AS critical thinking combining humanities and science Promoting AS critical thinkingAt Farnborough Sixth Form College, numbers have increased in:
Students who are unsure about their fourth subject are often recommended to take AS critical thinking – originally intended for use in year 13, but increasingly popular with year 12 students. Students claim that the subject, which is taught in mixed-year groups, increases their confidence in responding to other people’s arguments. Combining humanities and scienceMilton Keynes College, which has an A level department intake of around 80 students, lengthened the teaching day to create an extra option block and enable more subject combinations. When students were interviewed, they were asked to choose one humanities subject if their main programme was science-based, or one science subject if their programme was humanities-based. Most did so. The college deals with many first generation entrants to HE and wants to ensure that they have options beyond 18. Also see > Breadth and depth in the 14-19 curriculum |
