Meeting individual needs

Colleges

The new 14-19 phase is envisaged with the following characteristics:

  • young people who are equipped to plan at 13 or 14 for a goal at 19, without decisions being irrevocable
  • availability of diverse opportunities, matched to individuals
  • high-quality teaching and learning
  • differentiated progression into and through the phase
  • coherent learning programmes suited to the individual
  • secure progression routes in all learning pathways, and movement between them.

For this to be reality, there needs to be a focus on the individual learner. The discussion and guidance in this part of the website aims to help schools and colleges achieve that focus by adjusting their curriculum and practices as they find necessary.
