Designing a personalised curriculum for alternative provision at key stage 4

This guidance supports schools, LEAs and their partner providers in reviewing and developing the curriculum within alternative settings and establishing high expectations for students’ learning, achievement and progression. It emphasises the question ‘What does this young person need?’ rather than ‘What is available?’.

The guidance includes:

  • principles for planning the curriculum for students who have difficulty engaging with the full school curriculum
  • advice on translating the principles into practice, in order to secure students’ access to an appropriate curriculum and range of qualifications
  • examples of good practice within alternative provision in a diverse range of settings.
