Careers

Careers education and guidance (CEG) is an important component of the 14-19 curriculum and there is a statutory requirement for a programme of careers education in years 7 to 11.

Careers education is also an important strand of the citizenship curriculum and schemes of work for key stage 4 have been published. Careers teachers will find the scheme of work on rights and responsibilities in the world of work particularly useful.

Available guidance

Learning outcomes from careers education and guidance: this guidance gives examples of outcomes at key stage 3, key stage 4 and post-16, supported by case studies.
Using new qualifications to support careers education in schools and colleges: this guidance aims to inform schools and colleges of the new opportunities to accredit young people's learning through CEG and work-related learning programmes. It is intended to help schools and colleges assess how these accreditation schemes can improve the quality of teaching and learning, and raise the levels of young people's achievement and employability.
Developing skills for career management: this guidance can be ordered from QCA's online publications catalogue. It contains practical ideas and teaching strategies to develop and improve the skills that young people need to manage their careers. It shows how teachers can encourage young people to become self-reliant, able to make informed judgements and take effective decisions about their career and life choices.
